JAMMIN’ CONCEPTS – IV!

March 11th, 2009

YES!!! Another Successful Concept Art Jam… We had a solid turn out with some returning veterans. Great talent was in the house, and the work showed….

Vizlub promoter Jessica “Spazzy” Siegel graffitied our white boards and posted the nights theme “PREPARING FOR BATTLE – IN SPACE”. What that exactly meant to each artist was their own unique vision, in four hours.

The models Christopher and Melissa showed up and we were soon on our way…. both had great costumes and ideas for us to pick from and work with. A ray gun here, a headset there, throw in a leather belt, some goggles and soon we had a pilot and a mechanic suiting up for battle. Christopher also brought some great lights and some background colors which greatly enhanced the scene and set-up.

We had a great theme running and hunger was stirring in our bellies. Food was ordered up and soon we broke for some pizza, and it didn’t last long.

And the WINNERS were announced and the PRIZES were handed out!

SPOOKTACULAR CONCEPT ART JAM 3

November 20th, 2008

It was another fantastic installment of the Vizlub’s Concept Art JAM series! For the last three straight quarters the Vizlub has hosted a concept art contest for all of Ai’s finest to come out and challenge themselves and each other to a four hour duel of great art making!

Yes folks, from start to finish, the challenge was put-forth to create the best piece of concept art that each creator can conjure up!  Any medium in four hours.  The only thing provided was the theme and a pair of fantastic art models complete with costumes!

The “LUB” was pleased to invite back two of our finest models Christopher and Melissa who brought reinforcements!

Christopher was sporting a fantastic FULL-FLEDGED MUMMY COSTUME that he designed himself with a costume-fashion designer friend who helped him put it together.  Melissa brought some kick-ass boots, spectacles and her usually flawless persona and person and we were soon under way with tthe nights topic “CURSE of the MUMMY”.

Just in time for the fall season and holiday festivities, the night was SPOOKTACULAR!  The club has seen a lot of new faces as of late, and the energy was high!

Shortly after our start, money was pooled together and the pizzas were ordered up, and conceptors (<- ok, that one is mine) were firing on all cylinders with even more fuel on the way.

Numerous poses were taken throughout the evening and the models took on more and more rigorous poses for our creative inspiration (gotta hand it to them).  These two were workin’ over time!  But the drawings got better and better.

Some would have to leave early for other classes only to return later in time for the judging! It was a great night (a Wednesday) for picture-making and when the votes were tallied up, the winners were decided, and the prizes were handed out.

1st Place.  Fabio Comin ($50 gift certificate to Pearl)

2nd Place.  Jose Rene Ramirez ($25 gift certificate to Pearl)

3rd Place. Suzanne Hope Eby (Pelikan Gouache Cake set, 2 layers.. YEAH!)

GETTIN’ HELP

November 20th, 2008

In addition to being a “think tank” and a place to share your ideas and talents, the VIZLUB is also a tutoring center for the “rendering deficient”.  Are you having trouble with a drawing, perspective plate, or figuring out how to use color correctly in your paintings?  Well then swing by the VIZLUB!

Each quarter the VIZLUB meets once a week (weeks 2-9) to create a two hour workspace to not only work on special projects and cool concept art, but to GET HELP on any other rendering or drawing related needs you may have.

Whether it’s a comic book or graphic novel cover, a fashion illustration or layout, background or character design, or simply a gouache painting you are working on, you can swing by the VIZLUB to get some feedback and help.

The VIZLUB also create special projects like gallery shows, field trips and special lecture topics and demos. The VIZLUB is open to all majors and has no dues or fees, just swing by for however long you can stay. Hope to see you there!

EBNER DEMO AMAZES

November 14th, 2008

A visit from Berry Ebner provided some great insight into background landscape painting last week.  This was not to miss for sure!  If you haven’t had the pleasure of watching this master BUST OUT a landscape painting in about fifty-five minutes before your eyes, then you have missed one of the great rarities we have to offer at this school.  Barry Ebner is a veteran painter in general, but in this case, shared with us his expertise on painting landscapes plein-air style.  Plein-air painting is done ON LOCATION, and though Barry oddly enough was not on location for this demo, he worked from a previous painting of his (as reference) to recreate the experience right in our classroom before our eyes.

Slowly the landscape started to emerge as Barry provided the values and colors that unfolded the beautiful seaside landscape he formerly called home near Moro Bay California, San Luis Obispo.  Thanks Barry, I can’t wait to take a stab at it on my own at the upcoming Plein-air fieldtrip next Saturday.

PLEIN-AIR FIELD TRIP SATURDAY, 11/15/08

November 14th, 2008

The VIZLUB, is meeting in front of the DeYoung Museum at 10:30am sharp this Saturday, November 15, 2008, for a Plein-Air field study or outdoor landscape painting exercise.

If you are interested in joining us, please arrive sharply by 10:30 am.  We will soon be splitting up and finding our places to set up and paint through-out the park.  Bring whatever materials you want to work in, a little cash, water, a snack or whatever you feel you might need to be comfortable outdoors for 2-3hours. We should be done by 2pm.

I have release forms for you to sign when you arrive that must be signed before you begin.

Hope to see you there, and happy painting everyone…
